Wikipedia..I can’t exactly recall when i started using it, but mostly by late 2003, those days were my first at university.
Since then, i don’t remember not stopping by it each time i connect to the internet (excluding pure voice/video chat activity).
Yesterday i was browsing Wikipedia is a usual daily activity of mine, a Wikipedia donation ad:
It linked me to a Wikipedia Donation page, a letter to all the world from the founder of Wikipedia, asking for support. through his lines, i came by that he insisted to make Wikipedia “Ad Free”, Jimmy wales said :
Most people don’t know this, but I’m a volunteer.
I don’t get paid a cent for my work at Wikipedia, and neither do our thousands of other volunteer authors and editors. When I founded Wikipedia, I could have made it into a for-profit company with advertising banners, but I decided to do something different.
Commerce is fine. Advertising is not evil. But it doesn’t belong here. Not in Wikipedia
Few things came to my mind after finished reading that page:
- How Wikipedia would look like with Ads every where in it’s pages ? It’s gonna be catastrophic! So distracting and ultimately not readable or suitable as source of knowledge.
- How helpful was Wikipedia to me? How much knowledge i gained from it, even if was searching for a just definition to know what does it mean ?
- How many times i used Wikipedia?
Here comes the drama, i felt bad, very bad, and i thought it’s to give back, it was so shameful when i checked my contributions in Wikipedia (contributions by adding/editing articles) and it was only 1, i am so much of a knowledge consumer, not producer.
Sorry Jimmy, this is the least i could do..
I’ve donated to Wikipedia, will you ?
